Maniac Magee

Jeffery Lionel Magee was orphaned at the age of three when his parents were killed in a trolley accident. After eight years with his Uncle Dan and Aunt Dot, he decides to run away to Two Mills, Pennsylvania. This is where he gets his nickname, Maniac, because of his fearlessness and athletic ability. There are two sides of town in Two Mills. The East side is where the black people live, and the West side is where the white people live. Maniac makes friends, and some enemies, on both sides. No one would even dare to go to a different side, but Maniac does. He also lives with different people, like the Beale family on the East side and the McNabs on the West. He even lives in a zoo with a retired baseball player. Maniac tries to make friends with his enemies and bring both sides together.

I thought this book was really good because it is an adventure story that also has a message about friendship. It teaches lessons about not judging people by their race.
