Walk Two Moons

Salamanca (Sal) Tree Hiddle is thirteen years old and wishes to travel to Idaho from her home on her farm in Bybanks to bring her mother back home for her birthday. Her mother Chanhassen "Sugar" Pickford Hiddle left one April to calm down and find out what kind of person she is now. She planned to stay with her cousin and promised she would be home before the tulips bloomed. She is not, however, home yet. Sal now is moving to Ohio to live because her father felt their farm reminded him too much of her mother Sugar. Her new friend Phoebe has many problems too. Her mother has disappeared, she has met a potential lunatic, and receives mysterious messages. Sal finally goes on the long journey to Idaho wanting to find out what happened to her mother and bring her home for her birthday as she had planned. Her upbeat grandparents agree to drive her there. Sal gets many answers to a lot of questions, but will she like what she hears?
Walk Two Moons is a wonderful novel. It is many things, it is secretive, loving, and humorous. There are many unanswered questions in this book that after they were answered I wished they weren't because the answers were sad. That doesn't change the fact I loved the book. I must admit it isn't something I would normally think looked interesting on the shelf. I read this book because Mrs. Scott, our librarian, recommended it. I am glad I read it! It was just about everything I look for in a book and I wish there was a second one.
